Get Creative: 3 Easy DIY Projects You'll Love

With winter upon us, now is a great time to try your hand at some creative activities you can do in the comfort of your home. We’ve made a list of some of our favorite crafty tricks to enhance your living space. Check them out.

Assemble a Paintbrush Vase

If you’ve got some old paintbrushes lying around, this is a great way to give them new life while brightening your home with a fresh bouquet. Depending on the look you’re into, brushes that are already speckled with paint could add a fun touch, or you could dip the end of each brush into a different color, as if you stopped midproject. Start by stretching two or three rubber bands around an old peanut butter jar or an unwanted vase. Then start shoving your brushes between the bands and the container, in a circle, until only brushes are visible. That’s it! Place a fresh or dried bouquet in the center and behold its glory. Build a Cookbook Knife Block

This one’s so easy it seems like cheating! If you’re interested in a unique way to store your kitchen knives, give this a try. Visit a secondhand store, your local Goodwill, or an antique shop, and pick up a collection of vintage cookbooks in various sizes. Use kitchen twine or bailing wire to tie them together with their spines pointing in the same direction. Now, push each knife between the pages of the book matching its length. Note that you’ll want your knives to be dry before putting them away – but that will help your knives last longer wherever they’re kept.

Create a Custom Smartphone Case

There are few things as personal as a person’s smartphone. They are our photo albums, diaries, catalogs of our correspondences, our rolodexes, our encyclopedias, and more and more our sole means of communication. Why not show the world which phone’s yours with a custom homemade phone case? Start by buying a few ultra-cheap clear cases from Amazon. Lay one onto craft paper and trace its shape, then draw a design, cut it out, and glue on shapes, or glue dried, pressed flowers to its surface. Push your completed artwork into the case, slip it onto your phone, and you’re ready to flaunt your cellular flair! Here are some ideas to get you started.
